Few of the pictures on this board show ordinary daily labor as plainly as this one, a view of firewood for sale in Jerusalem. The glass negative comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection at the Library of Congress, a body of news photographs assembled by the Bain News Service in New York in the early twentieth century. The record gives no date, and the title is taken from caption cards the agency attached to its negatives, so it has not been independently verified. Still, the scene fits the city's working life of that era, when fuel for cooking and heating was carried and sold through its crowded streets.
