Looking across the valley from the Mount of Olives, this glass negative frames the walled Old City of Jerusalem, a view that has drawn pilgrims, travelers and photographers for centuries. The Bain News Service, a New York photo agency that supplied news pictures in the early twentieth century, made and captioned the negative, though the record leaves its exact date unknown. The Mount of Olives, east of the city, is a traditional site of Jesus's ascension and holds some of Jerusalem's oldest Jewish cemeteries, which makes the vantage point as much a religious landmark as a scenic one. Photographs like this one were widely circulated as souvenirs and illustrations of the Holy Land.
