The record gives this view the title "Tombs of Judges, Jerusalem," though the Bain News Service label that supplied it is unverified, so the name should be read with some caution. Rock-cut tombs of this kind, cut into limestone around Jerusalem, date largely to the Second Temple period and later, and many were reused over the centuries. The negative belongs to the George Grantham Bain Collection, a body of glass negatives made by a New York news photo agency in the early twentieth century, when Jerusalem was still under Ottoman rule. Its value lies less in a dated event than in how it records an ancient site as outsiders saw it at that time.
