A Catholic bishop arriving in Jerusalem for the Christmas season is the subject of this glass negative, one of many Holy Land views made for the Bain News Service. Bain's New York agency sold news photographs to newspapers in the early twentieth century, and its scenes from Jerusalem reflected the steady stream of Western pilgrims and clergy who visited the city at the holidays. Jerusalem had long been an Ottoman city, and its Latin Catholic community was led by a Latin Patriarch, so a visiting prelate's arrival would have drawn notice. The record does not name the bishop or fix the date, so the title is the main guide to the occasion.
