A man from Bethlehem sits astride a donkey in this photochrom print, a pairing meant to show the everyday life of the town traditionally linked with the Nativity. Made in the 1890s, when Western travelers to Palestine, then under Ottoman rule, eagerly sought images of the places and people they knew from scripture, it reflects the appetite for souvenir views of the Holy Land. The photochrom process, a Swiss color printing method licensed in America by the Detroit Publishing Company, gave photographs rich, painterly tones, and this example appears in the firm's 1905 catalog of Holy Land views. The rider is presented less as an individual than as a type of local life.
