Its title, "An Israelite," names a type of person rather than a landmark, which sets it apart from the many street and gate views of Jerusalem in the same series. The print is a photochrom, a process that used several color-separated printing stones to give a photograph a hand-tinted look. It was issued by the Detroit Publishing Company, which sold these Holy Land views to American buyers who were drawn to biblical places. The record dates it to the 1890s, when such scenes were popular as keepsakes and teaching aids.
