Jerusalem is the subject here, shown in a broad panoramic view taken from a high vantage point over the old city. The print is a photochrom, a process that transferred photographs to stone and applied color by hand-registered plates, which gave these Holy Land scenes their soft, painterly palette. It was issued by the Detroit Publishing Company, which marketed photochroms of religious and travel subjects to American and European buyers around the turn of the twentieth century. Images like this one were popular as souvenirs and as aids for readers of the Bible who wanted to picture the sacred city.
