John Wesley preaching at his father's grave in the churchyard at Epworth, Lincolnshire, on Sunday, June 6, 1742, is the scene this hand-colored lithograph sets out to show. Samuel Wesley, the Anglican rector of Epworth, had died in 1735, and his son was refused the use of the parish church pulpit, so the founder of Methodism addressed a large crowd outdoors among the gravestones. The print comes from the Currier & Ives firm of New York, which issued many sentimental and religious scenes for a wide popular market in the nineteenth century. Its subject, a field sermon in a churchyard, was a favorite of Methodist and evangelical storytelling.
