The bilingual title, with its Portuguese line "Jesus carregado da cruz" beneath the English, sets this sheet apart from most of the religious prints Nathaniel Currier issued. It shows Christ carrying the cross to Calvary, a scene from the Passion that had been a staple of Christian devotional art for centuries. Currier's New York firm, founded in 1835, sold inexpensive lithographs to a broad public, and its hand-colored sheets were often finished by teams of workers applying color by stencil or brush. Catalogued in the 1983 Currier & Ives raisonné, this print is a useful example of how the firm reached Catholic and non-English-speaking buyers in the 1840s.
