The Crucifixion is one of the most familiar subjects in Christian art, and this 1848 lithograph adds a Portuguese caption, "Jesus posto em cruz," beside its English title, which suggests it was meant for a multilingual market. Nathaniel Currier issued it in New York nearly a decade before he partnered with James Merritt Ives, when his firm was still a small lithography shop. Its colors were added by hand, often by workers who repeated the same tints across many copies, so no two sheets look exactly alike. The catalog citation, Gale Research number 3499, helps researchers locate it among Currier's religious prints.
