Here the subject is a single moment from the Passion: a cloth pressed to Christ's face, which tradition says left his features printed on it. Known as the Veil of Veronica, the legend is tied to the Stations of the Cross, the devotional sequence that follows Jesus's path to Calvary. Published by Nathaniel Currier in New York around 1848, this hand-colored lithograph shows how an inexpensive print shop could bring sacred scenes into ordinary homes. Its English and Spanish title suggests the firm meant it for more than one language community.
