Currier's print of the entombment carries its title in English, Portuguese and French, a reminder that the firm's religious pictures were sold to a varied public. In the 1840s Nathaniel Currier was producing inexpensive lithographs in New York, and many were finished by hand, with workers, often women, applying color by stencil-like methods along the printed outlines. Scenes like this one reached households that might own few other pictures, and the Gale Research catalog raisonné lists it as number 3494. Because the color was applied by hand, impressions from the same stone can differ noticeably in tone.
