Here Jesus falls beneath the cross for the first time, the third station in the traditional Way of the Cross, and the title appears in both English and Spanish. Nathaniel Currier published this hand-colored lithograph from his New York shop around 1848, when the firm was selling inexpensive, colorful prints for homes and parlors. The Spanish caption suggests it was likely aimed at Spanish-speaking Catholic buyers, and the print is catalogued in the standard Currier & Ives reference work.
