A hand-colored lithograph from Nathaniel Currier's New York shop, this print shows the moment Jesus is sentenced to die, with the Spanish caption "Jesus condenado a muerte" set beneath the title. Currier issued many religious subjects in the 1840s, when lithography had made inexpensive pictures affordable to ordinary households, and scenes like this one were often colored by hand in workshops to add warmth and appeal. The Spanish text suggests the sheet was aimed partly at Spanish-speaking buyers, a reminder of how the firm sought customers beyond English-speaking America. The print is catalogued in the standard reference on Currier & Ives, which helps place it among the firm's early output.
