Its title appears in three languages, English, Spanish and French, which suggests the firm hoped to reach buyers beyond English speakers. The scene comes from the Gospel accounts of Jesus brought before Pontius Pilate, the Roman governor who questioned him before the crucifixion. Nathaniel Currier issued this hand-colored lithograph in New York in 1847, several years before he partnered with James Ives, and the coloring, done by hand on each sheet, gives individual copies slight differences in tone. Religious subjects like this one sold steadily to households, so the print offers a window into popular devotional taste in the 1840s.
