Few American prints of the 1840s carried a title in three languages, but this hand-colored lithograph by Nathaniel Currier names its scene in English, Spanish, and French. It shows Christ before Pontius Pilate, the Roman governor who questioned Jesus and, despite his doubts, handed him over for crucifixion, as the Gospels describe. Printed in New York in 1847, before Currier's partnership with James Ives, it belongs to the inexpensive religious pictures that circulated widely in American homes, and the hand coloring gives each impression its own warmer look.
