Here Christ is shown at the bedside of Jairus' daughter, the girl whom the Gospels describe as dead and whom Jesus restores to life, a scene the catalog records under deathbed subjects. The image reproduces a painting by Theodore von Holst, an English artist who died young, and it was engraved in mezzotint by Emily Sartain, a Philadelphia engraver and daughter of the engraver John Sartain. Bradley & Co. published the print in Philadelphia around 1866. Mezzotint's soft, velvety tones suited the quiet, emotional religious scenes that were popular in American homes at the time.
