Few images on this board show Martin Luther surrounded by the figures who came before and after him. This color lithograph, published in New York in 1874 by H. Schile, gathers scenes from Luther's life, including his nailing of theses to a church door and his appearance at the Diet of Worms, around a group of reformers. Among them are Jan Hus, John Wycliffe, Girolamo Savonarola, Philipp Melanchthon, and Johann Bugenhagen, along with the Protestant rulers Gustavus Adolphus and Bernhard of Saxe-Weimar. The sheet was adapted by H. Breul from an original by H. Brückner and was aimed at German-speaking Lutheran readers in America.
