This lithograph reproduces an original painting of Martin Luther by F.W. Wehle, issued by the Milwaukee Lithographing and Engraving Company around 1882. Luther (1483–1546), the German monk whose 1517 Ninety-five Theses helped launch the Protestant Reformation, was the subject of renewed attention in 1883, the 400th anniversary of his birth, which prompted commemorations among Lutherans and German-American communities. Portraits of reformers like Luther were often reproduced for sale to churches and households, so prints of this kind helped make his face familiar well beyond Germany. The copyright notation on the record points to registration with the U.S. Copyright Office, which helps date the print.
