Louis Kurz's painting of the Crucifixion reached the public here as a color lithograph, a reproduction method that let a single religious scene circulate widely in homes and churches in the early twentieth century. The print carries a 1907 copyright held by Kurz & Allison, the Chicago firm that issued many widely distributed religious and historical pictures of the period. Kurz himself was a Chicago-based painter known for devotional and biblical subjects, and his treatment of Christ's death drew on the tradition of sacred art that had long shaped how Americans pictured the Passion. Lithographs like this one helped make such images affordable enough to hang on ordinary walls.
