Nathaniel Currier, working in New York before his partnership with James Ives, issued this hand-colored lithograph of the Crucifixion sometime between the mid-1830s and 1856, when the firm was building its reputation on cheap, widely sold pictures for ordinary households. Religious subjects like this one were a steady part of the Currier output, aimed at a middle-class public that bought pictures for the parlor and the family Bible shelf. Because the print was colored by hand, two copies rarely look identical, and the catalog that records it (Gale Research's Currier & Ives catalog raisonné, no. 1442) is the standard reference for tracing its variants.
