Currier & Ives, the New York lithography firm that turned out cheap, colorful prints for a mass market, took up a scene that appears throughout Christian art: Jesus walking across the Sea of Galilee toward his disciples' boat during a storm, as told in the Gospels of Matthew and John. The firm's catalog of its work, compiled by Gale Research and published in 1983, lists this print as number 1191, and its date range runs from 1856 to 1907, the years the firm operated. Prints like this one were bought for family parlors and Sunday school rooms, where the image of faith steadying a frightened crew on rough water carried a message of reassurance.
