Christ walking on the sea" depicts the Gospel episode in which Jesus crosses the Sea of Galilee to his disciples' boat during a storm. Nathaniel Currier issued the lithograph in New York sometime between 1835 and 1856, when his shop produced inexpensive prints for family parlors and churchgoing households. Like many of these sheets, it was hand colored, so tones can vary from one surviving impression to another. The subject suited the firm's devotional line, since its message of faith amid danger translated easily into small, affordable images for the home.
