Currier & Ives's lithograph of Christ stilling the tempest takes a scene from the Gospels, in which Jesus calms a storm on the Sea of Galilee with a word, and gives it a stormy, dramatic treatment suited to the firm's popular religious prints. Issued in New York in 1871, it was one of many inexpensive lithographs the company sold to households and Sunday school rooms during the 1870s, when illustrated religious images were a common part of home decoration. The print is catalogued in the Gale Research raisonné of Currier & Ives work, where it appears as number 1185, which helps place it among the firm's mass-produced output of that decade.
