Few religious prints of the period pair a title this direct with a symbol this familiar: a star standing for redemption, and Christ named as the light that guides. Issued from New York in 1849, eight years before Nathaniel Currier partnered with James Merritt Ives, it dates from the years when Currier was producing inexpensive prints for a broad middle-class public. Devotional images like this one hung in parlors and family rooms, serving as both decoration and a daily reminder of faith. The star motif draws on the Bethlehem story, which Christians had long read as a sign of salvation.
