Nathaniel Currier's 1846 hand-colored lithograph "Christ at the Well" takes its subject from the New Testament account of Jesus meeting a Samaritan woman at Jacob's well, a scene drawn from the Gospel of John. Currier issued many religious subjects like this one in the 1840s, when his firm was building a steady trade in inexpensive pictures for American parlors and family Bibles. Prints of this kind were often colored by hand, which helped make them affordable while still giving them a warm, finished look. The record cites Gale Research's catalog raisonné of Currier & Ives, which numbers this print among the firm's early output.
