Christ restoreth the blind" is a hand-colored lithograph issued in New York in 1846 by Nathaniel Currier, several years before his partnership with James Merritt Ives gave the firm its familiar name. The subject comes from the Gospel accounts of Jesus healing blind men, a story told in several books of the New Testament and long popular in religious art. Currier sold inexpensive prints like this one to a broad middle-class public, and the color was added by hand, often by workers painting each impression in turn. Many of the firm's religious subjects were built to be read at a glance, so the scene's meaning would have been clear even to a quick viewer.
