Few prints on this board carry three titles at once. This lithograph is labeled in English, Spanish and French, which suggests the New York publisher, Currier & Ives, hoped to reach buyers beyond English-speaking households. From the 1850s into the early 1900s, the firm produced huge numbers of inexpensive color prints that were sold in shops and hung in parlors and kitchens. This example was hand colored after printing, so the tints vary somewhat from copy to copy. Religious subjects like this one were a steady part of the firm's output.
