Titled in Latin as *Christus consolator*, or "Christ the Comforter," this lithograph was issued by N. Currier in New York sometime between 1835 and 1856, before his 1857 partnership with James Merritt Ives. Like most of the firm's output, it was printed in black and white and then colored by hand, a step that made each copy slightly different. Devotional scenes such as this one sold well to middle-class households, where religious pictures hung in parlors and family rooms. The Gale Research catalog raisonné lists it as number 1187.
