The title on this 1847 lithograph appears in both Italian and French, "La Crucificazion" and "La Crucifixion," which sets it apart from many sacred subjects Nathaniel Currier issued in these years. Currier was working alone in New York, before his partnership with James Merritt Ives began in 1857, and he sold inexpensive prints to a broad public. The bilingual lettering suggests he hoped to reach buyers who read Italian or French. The sheet was colored by hand, a common practice of the period, so individual copies rarely match exactly.
