Few prints on this board carry two titles, and this one labels its subject in both French and Spanish: *La Descente de Croix* and *La Bajada de la Cruz*. The bilingual wording suggests the firm meant it for buyers beyond English-speaking homes, including Catholic communities in French- and Spanish-speaking regions. Currier & Ives, based in New York from the 1830s until 1907, sold inexpensive lithographs to a broad public, and many were colored by hand, which helped keep prices modest. The subject comes from the Gospel accounts and shows the body of Christ being lowered from the cross for burial, a scene that painters had treated for centuries.
