The title here appears in English, Portuguese, and French, a sign that the firm hoped to reach buyers beyond English speakers. The subject, Christ being taken down from the cross, was a favorite of European painters for centuries, and Nathaniel Currier, who began his New York lithography business in 1835, drew on well-known religious compositions to sell inexpensive devotional images. Hand coloring, added to the printed sheet by workers, gave this copy its warm tones and made each impression slightly different. Its 1847 date places it in the firm's early years, when religious and sentimental subjects helped build its reputation.
