Its French title, *Le chemin de la très ste. croix*, points to the Way of the Cross, the devotional path that traces Christ's walk to Calvary. Catholic devotion to these scenes, usually arranged as fourteen stations, was widespread in Europe and was carried into church art and printed images for centuries. Published by Nathaniel Currier in New York around 1845, the lithograph dates from a period when his firm sold inexpensive pictures to a broad American public, many of them Protestant families who were still drawn to religious subjects. The hand coloring, applied by workers rather than the printer, varies from one surviving impression to another and is worth noticing.
