Its title is a line from a Protestant hymn, and the print pairs that devotional text with a picture meant for the Christian home. Published in New York by Currier & Ives around 1874, it is a hand-colored lithograph, a process that let the firm sell affordable religious images to a broad middle-class market. Like many of the firm's sacred subjects, it was made to hang on a parlor or bedroom wall, where its sentiment of faith in the cross could be seen daily. The hand coloring, applied to each sheet after printing, means that no two impressions looked exactly alike.
