Currier & Ives's hand-colored lithograph takes its subject from the Book of Daniel, in which the prophet is thrown into a den of lions for refusing to stop praying to God, and is spared when an angel shuts the animals' mouths. The firm, which ran from 1834 into the early twentieth century, sold such religious scenes as affordable images for home walls, Sunday schools and family Bibles, and their hand coloring was often done by a team of workers applying color by stencil or brush. The print is catalogued in Gale Research's raisonné of the firm's work (no. 1477), which makes it a useful reference for anyone studying the company's output.
