Nathaniel Currier issued this hand-colored lithograph under his own name, before his firm took the Currier & Ives partnership in 1857, so it reflects the earlier phase of the shop's business. It illustrates the Book of Daniel, chapter 6, in which the prophet is thrown into a den of lions for refusing to stop praying to God. Currier's firm produced inexpensive prints like this one for a wide middle-class market, and biblical scenes such as this were common in American parlors and family Bibles of the period.
