A color halftone reproduction of a painting by Lucas Cranach, this print preserves the likeness of Martin Luther (1483-1546), the German theologian whose 1517 challenge to indulgences launched the Protestant Reformation. Cranach, court painter in Wittenberg to the Electors of Saxony, was a close friend of Luther and produced many of the portraits that fixed the reformer's appearance in the public mind. Halftone printing let such paintings circulate widely in books and pamphlets, so reproductions like this one, made between 1900 and 1950, carried Cranach's image of Luther to audiences far from the original workshop.
