Pope Leo XIII, who led the Catholic Church from 1878 until his death in 1903, is shown here in full papal vestments, the white cassock, mozzetta and skullcap that marked the pontiff's public role. Color lithography was a popular way to reproduce images of the pope in the late nineteenth century, when portraits like this one circulated widely among Catholic households and parishes. Leo's long reign, which spanned the transition into the modern era, made his likeness one of the most recognizable of its time. Notice the bold color work in the robes, typical of prints made for devotional and commemorative sale.
