Leonardo da Vinci's The Last Supper is a mural in the refectory of the Convent of Santa Maria delle Grazie in Milan, and any reproduction of it begins with that wall. Painted between about 1495 and 1498, the work shows the moment Jesus tells the twelve apostles that one of them will betray him, and each figure reacts in a distinct gesture and expression. Leonardo used oil and tempera on dry plaster rather than fresh plaster, so the paint began deteriorating within his lifetime and has been restored many times. Color prints of the scene have carried it into homes and churches for centuries.
