Bearing the AD monogram of Albrecht Dürer, this woodcut shows the Last Supper, the meal Christ shared with his twelve apostles in an upper room before his arrest, as the Gospels describe it. It is dated 1523, late in Dürer's career, when he was working in Nuremberg and making religious images that could be printed in quantity for private devotion. Woodcut suited that purpose, since one carved block could yield many impressions, and the bold black outlines keep the figures and the table legible even in later copies. Look closely at how the lines model the apostles' gestures and the folds of their robes.
