The block is signed with the monogram AD, the cipher Albrecht Dürer used on his prints, so the attribution rests on that mark. The scene shows Christ and the twelve apostles at the table, the moment of the Last Supper that the Gospels describe, with its quiet tension as the meal unfolds. Woodcuts like this were cheap to print and easy to circulate, which made them a common way for religious images to reach households in early sixteenth-century Germany. Dürer's blocks were reissued and copied widely, so this impression is worth comparing with other printings of the same design.
