Its title comes from the hymn "Rock of Ages," written by the English clergyman Augustus Toplady in 1763, whose lines describe a faith sheltered in a cleft rock. This color lithograph, dated about 1873, pairs that image with the cross, the central symbol of Christianity in its catalog listing. Color lithographs like this were produced in quantity during the 1870s and sold to households for parlors and family rooms, where religious pictures were common. The copyright notation names the publisher, Colton, Zahm and Roberts, and records the work's registration with the U.S. Copyright Office.
