Frederick Gleason's Boston firm produced this color lithograph of Faith, Hope and Charity, the three theological virtues from 1 Corinthians 13:13, shown here as a trio of figures gathered around a cross. Gleason was a prominent publisher of popular illustrated prints in the 1860s and 1870s, and his shop turned out religious and sentimental subjects that were sold to families for parlors and Sunday school rooms. The image reflects the Victorian taste for allegory, in which abstract spiritual qualities were given human form, angels and cross included, so that a viewer could read the message at a glance.
