Three robed women, named for the theological virtues, stand together in this allegorical picture, and the golden anchor is the detail that sets it apart. Faith, Charity and Hope were a favorite subject for artists in the 1800s and early 1900s, when such figures appeared on church windows, memorial cards and sentimental prints. Hope's anchor, drawn from the letter to the Hebrews describing hope as "an anchor of the soul," is the emblem that identifies her and ties the scene to scripture. Its gilded finish suggests the work was meant to be displayed as a devotional or decorative piece rather than as a plain illustration.
