Set at the center of a sheet whose borders are built from fine pen lettering, this Last Supper shows how nineteenth-century writing masters turned penmanship into decoration. The engraving follows the Gospel account in which Jesus shares a final meal with his twelve apostles and says that one of them will betray him. Engraved versions of the subject spread widely after Leonardo da Vinci's mural in Milan, so the composition would have been familiar to many viewers.
