The Lord's Prayer set out in ornate decorative lettering is a familiar subject on the Occasions and Religious boards, and this example stands apart for its treatment of the text itself, where the words are shaped into flourishing scrollwork rather than plain print. Pieces like this were widely made in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, when illuminated and calligraphic texts hung in parlors and Sunday schools as both devotion and display. Their makers often used the prayer's familiar opening words as the focal point, so the lettering becomes an image in its own right. Looking closely, the viewer can trace how the hand moved from one flourish to the next.
