The Lord's Prayer and the Ten Commandments are set side by side here as a pair, a format common in Protestant homes and schools from the nineteenth century onward. Such texts were often printed as decorative wall pieces, sometimes with ornamental borders, lettering or small illustrations, so that families could read them daily. Pairing the prayer with the commandments reflects the widely held idea that both offered a moral framework for everyday conduct. Notice how the layout and lettering reveal the taste of their period as much as the words themselves.
