A horse-drawn sleigh and a group of figures move across a snow-covered scene at night, with the holiday itself named in the title as the event being pictured. Winter sleigh scenes like this were a favorite subject for printmakers in the 19th and early 20th centuries, when Christmas was becoming the warm, family-centered holiday many people now recognize. Images of this kind often blended the religious meaning of the season with the cozy traditions of travel, gift-giving and gathering together. Looking closely, viewers can notice how the cold blue of the snow contrasts with lit windows or lanterns, a device that suggested warmth and welcome against the dark.
