Santa Claus rides across a snowy sky in a sleigh pulled by reindeer, the kind of scene that became a staple of holiday postcards in the early 20th century. Cards like this were mass-printed and mailed in large numbers during the season, often in color lithography that gave the red suit and greens a bold, cheerful finish. The sleigh-and-reindeer image grew out of the 1823 poem often called "A Visit from St. Nicholas," which gave American Christmas its flying reindeer and jolly gift-giver. Look closely at the cards of this era and you will see how artists turned that verse into a settled, recognizable picture.
