A Merry Christmas postcard built around Santa Claus and a sled, a pairing that became a staple of holiday imagery in the decades around 1900. Early twentieth-century greeting cards like this one were mass-produced in large numbers and mailed across the country, often sent as cheap, colorful notes between relatives and friends. Santa's sled, drawn from the sleigh-and-reindeer tradition popularized by the 1823 poem often called "A Visit from St. Nicholas," helped fix his image in American homes. Cards such as this show how the jolly, round-bellied Santa was being shaped for a mass audience in that era.
